The show must go on

Flying Copper Contraptions anyone? Yes their still out there flying around “The Space” in Old Town Eureka, 620 2nd to be exact. Yesterday I did a little massaging of the space and moved the Fly Boys up towards the front of the store. Perfect for window viewing and of course shopping! Next months featured artist will be Georgia Long, check her work out you will like. Enjoy!

Humboldt Freedom

Ideas that become reality - Humboldt Freedom the latest to reach that status, nice. Sometimes you gotta toot your own horn, toot toot this ones in the books, el finee! completo! Simple ideas soon morph into something more complex, let the piece take you where it needs to go. Spend the time to make it actually happen. Most importantly finish that bad dog cuz something unfinished is just unfinished. Make it happen.

Doing this build took me back to being a kid in Iowa growing up building car models with my brother, we’d paint em up make em look real. Fast forward now the same except I have to come up with the idea, make the parts and assemble, no big deal thats the fun part. Remember where you came from and you will go far.

2025 has arrived with a bang

Unfortunately it hasn’t been the best of weeks, buddies best friend seeing eye dog Releve unexpectedly died day before NYE, what a serious bummer. So I took a bit of down time to reflect but also to know this hound would of said “get your ass back to work” so I have been, slowly. “Humboldt Freedom” trike sculpture is close to completion but when you add a rider you add that much more time and effort. Let the piece decide where it goes, you will know when it’s time to say “when”. Enjoy the ride, 2025 has arrived!

Finish the year with a copper sculpture! Watch "Humboldt Freedom" be built from ground up

Idea was simple, build a 70’s style trike chopper, knucklehead engine. Figure out all the rest along the ride. Ordered race slicks and motorcycle kids toy tires for a perfect burn out kinda sculpture. Of course as all pieces they take a life of their own and this one has as well. A three belt drive system? Humboldt Belt Co. supplied all the necessary belts to make the “Humboldt Freedom” fly like the wind. Check out the “as we build” show. Build continues till finished. So check back in once in awhile and see the progress. Goal have this racer rolling by Christmas. Thanks for stopping by.

End of the year what to do?

The big rush of creating new artwork for “Featured Artist” always puts a foot in my backside. Get stuff done now today, do not wait for tomorrow! Looking forward to 2025 many things come to mind. Ferndale sketches are sighted in along with yet another world travel yet to be determined. In talking with a buddy yesterday the topic came up whether art is selling, my answer was simple, no. Just because my artwork does not sell does not mean that gives me a free pass to loaf the rest of my life. I have the natural born talent it would be sad for me not to pursue my art until I can no longer. I see many people with talent that they just waste, how sad. Get Motivated now! For tomorrow may never come. Art on my friends!

Two shows rolled into one. Flying Copper Contraptions & Europe sketches 2024

Had the great opportunity to be the featured Artist for the third month straight so what to do? Get busy and make Art. So I set out and with a buddy who wanted to learn the coppersmith trade. Mike showed up everyday for three weeks, job still incomplete. Lots of learning was had, a humbling expeirence. He said “you make it look easy, which it is not”. Over 100 hours combined effort to pull this one off. Base company is Talon Air with the airplane named Fish Hawk 5 for five props and five screw ups by Mike. Enjoy the ride! Arts Alive Dec 7, 2024

"Taking it to the streets - Europe 2024"

Show will be showing until the end of 2024. “The Space” located at 620 2nd street old town Eureka is open M-Sat so stop on by when it’s good for you. Get lost in Europe even if only for a short moment. We all need a nice break once in awhile.

Almost blew myself up!

Ever have one of those “Oh Shit” happenings? Almost blew myself up the other day. Working away like always, cutting a piece of steel and hear this “Pop” noise. What the heck was that? Look over to my acetylene tank which has flames all around the intake fitting to a full tank of gas! Yikes, holy moly!!! I quickly extinguished flame which totally surrounded the screw on fitting. Holy crap, lots of deep quick breathes scared shitless. What just happened? Had to get back on the horse and figure this problem out now, not tomorrow. Fired up the torch once again, no problem with run times shut off go back to cutting steel, POP! Once again flames surround the neck portion of acetylene tank, Not again! Extinguished the flames a second time with hands, luckily, I had gloves on. Okay that’s twice, time to stand down and figure out the cause. Problem was old torch handle, original from my beginnings which has no flash arresters. Obviously, the torch had fire still left in it and traveled back up the source of gas to tank neck fitting. It scared me so bad my thoughts were “maybe it’s time to put the torch aside” but imagine your most used tool for over 35years no more because you’re scared? Nope not happening fix the problem and get over it. I swapped out torch handle with a second torch I have that does have the flash arresters and completed an entire afternoon of controlled burns. Back to Operations Normal. This has never happened in over 35 years of burning copper. Wow! Live everyday as if it’s your last cuz one day it will be. ART ON!!!

"Art Passport" my art on navigational charts

New idea for me, chart art has been around awhile and thought I’d like to re-visit this once again. My original airbrush “chart art” of Trinidad harbor hangs on my living room wall to this day. Everyone loves a passport stamp so I’ve come up with many of my own styles. Combining local charts with local art scenes is 100% spot on everything!

Covid still goes but does that stop you from doing stuff? New shark build close to completion, very large and in charge. He goes by “Shark Buoy”. Very large dark intimidating eyes 2.5” all wrapped in a copper skin. Check out Shark Buoy first chance you get. You will be scared!

Wow! What happened to 2020?

Obviously I have neglected to post recent Art happenings. With the current COVID-19 pandemic I’ve been closed in like the rest of you. Late March 2020 I relocated my welding equipment back home, rebuilt new work bench and went to work, from home. Fast forward to end of June I totally rebuilt back portion of Copper Quad Art Car. Out with the old granny seat, in with a new racing Recaro seat! With that came a new design and name for machine on door. Using 3/16” cold roll steel rod I formed up the trunk design. Welded steel to steel which makes for a most excellent weld. Then came time for making a ton of steel rivet tabs, then welded on @ 5/32” rivet. Artwork of course had to be added to all panels and took a considerable amount of time to do. All by hand with a few hammers, punches, awls and engraver. Trunk had to open to access the two new Lithium 52 volt batteries. I installed a 1 - 2 switch to switch from battery 1 to battery 2. You have to manually check battery charge. With the trunk recently completed my goal has been achieved. Goal: Make reliable human power / electric assist transpo. I did and have been riding back and forth to work. Mission Accomplished!

End of the Art year 2019

Really don’t know where the time goes, maybe kayaking on good days is the answer? Anyways lots of new works as of late. Keeping up with a changing theme every month for Arts Alive keeps one busy. Busy is good. I’ll be open along with Glass Garage weekends in December. Stop by for some most excellent deals!

Copper Quad Art Car

Guess it’s been awhile since I’ve added to my log. Copper Quad copper skinning has been completed entire frame has been primed & painted. Copper skin have all been riveted together. Have experienced a few breakdowns due to the additional weight of the body. Two broken front spokes, wheels in for repairs. Then forward mounting bracket broke. No problem easy fix just need to beef up the weld, good to go! Arts Alive April 6, 6-9pm!

Arts Alive - November 2018

Cardboard skin for the Copper Quad you ask? Why yes, gives me time over time to contemplate whether I like the design I have in front of me. If something doesn’t work then tear it out and do something else. After all its only cardboard found in the dumpster across the street. Free 99 all dang day long!
